Ensuring access to affordable, secure and clean energy is moving up economic policy agendas worldwide. While the objective is a global priority and international coordination is key, policy frameworks on the country level are vital to pursue this goal.
With this in mind, the Council on Economic Policies is hosting a series of roundtables to explore the opportunities and challenges for a sustainable energy future and to build a global community of experts to drive progress and seize synergies across G20 countries. The first roundtable was held in Paris in March 2024. The upcoming roundtable in London will be the second in the series, with the following two planned for New Delhi and Washington D.C.
The convening in London focused on the United Kingdom, where energy consumption and carbon emissions are declining, high energy bills remain a social concern and reducing the dependence on imported fuels is a key policy objective. The UK government has recently circulated a draft Strategy and Policy Statement for Energy Policy, which identifies key government priorities. This includes protecting consumers, especially vulnerable households, with measures such as support to home improvements. It also aims at fostering energy security with renewables, nuclear and other sources, together with well-functioning energy markets, as well as decarbonising the energy system by 2050, with interim targets. The Shadow Cabinet has announced its own strategy.
Against this background, the roundtable provided a platform to explore effective fiscal policies and regulatory frameworks for an affordable, secure and clean energy future in the UK.
