Governing China’s Financial System: Monetary Policy and Financial Regulation in a Changing Macroeconomic Environment

China’s financial system is operating in an increasingly complex landscape shaped by profound structural transformations and evolving macroeconomic conditions. Technological innovation, demographic change, and the transition to a greener economy are interacting with more immediate challenges, such as subdued domestic demand and increasing fragmentation of the global economy. In this environment, monetary policy and financial regulation are essential for maintaining stability, strengthening confidence, and enabling China’s next phase of development.

To understand the challenges ahead and explore options for rethinking and adapting financial governance over the next five years, CEP is co-hosting a roundtable in Hong Kong, together with the ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic Research Office (AMRO).

Topics for discussion include Governing Finance for Sustainable Prosperity, approaches to Financial Regulation and Systemic Resilience, and a deep dive on e-CNY, Digitalization, and the Future of Money.

Held under the Chatham House Rule, the discussion shall provide an opportunity to exchange views and best practices, foster a shared understanding of the challenges ahead, and explore options for rethinking and adapting financial governance over the next five years.
